Duplex Ultrasound
Unlike the anatomy of your arteries, which is consistent in just about everyone, the anatomy of your superficial veins (veins that are just under your skin) vary greatly from person to person. Though it is usually easy to diagnose varicose and spider veins via visual examination, often we will do a venous ultrasound in order to get a clearer picture of the underlying problem - venous reflux. In healthy veins, there is continuous flow of blood from the limbs back toward the heart. There are valves within the veins of the legs that prevent the backflow or congestion of blood. Venous insufficiency occurs when there is backward leakage of blood flow through damaged valves
During a venous ultrasound, a wand-like device called a transducer is skimmed over the surface of the leg. This device produces a visual "map" of your superficial and deep veins. We also use Doppler ultrasound to map the direction of blood flow within the veins. Using the information from the ultrasound, we can provide the optimum therapy for your particular problem. Venous Ultrasound Testing is a painless and safe test that takes about 30-45 minutes, and requires no advanced preparation.
