Radiofrequency Ablation (RF)

What is Radiofrequency Ablation?

Radiofrequency Ablation (RF) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat venous reflux disease, using radiofrequency to heat and seal shut diseased veins and address the underlying cause of severe varicose veins. During the procedure a catheter is positioned into the diseased vein through a small incision. The catheter is powered by radiofrequency energy and delivers controlled heat to the vein wall, causing the collagen in the wall to shrink and the vein to close. The body automatically re-routes blood flow through healthier veins, and the restoration of normal circulation relieves the distention of surface veins. The ablated vein becomes scar tissue and is eventually absorbed by the body. Similar to EndoVenous Laser Treatment (EVLT), RF ablation is performed on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia.

Under ultrasound guidance, a catheter is positioned into the diseased vein through a small opening in the skin. The tiny catheter powered by radiofrequency energy delivers controlled heat to the vein wall causing the collagen in the wall to shrink and the vein to close. Once the diseased vein is closed, blood is re-routed to other healthy veins.

Is the Procedure Painful?

Many patients experience little or no pain. As mentioned before, the procedure is performed under local anesthetic. A dilute solution called "tumescent" is used. You will feel the prick of the needle used to inject the anesthetic, but you will be completely numb for the remainder of the procedure. You may feel pressure as the anesthetic is injected, but this only lasts a few seconds until the medication takes its effect. Since the area around the vein is numb, you will not feel the radiofrequency fiber when it is fired.
