Infrared Coagulation (IRC)

What Is IRC Infrared Coagulation?

Infrared coagulation 一 sometimes referred to as coagulation therapy 一  is a non-surgical procedure offered at Vein Institute to treat small and medium internal hemorrhoids. IRC shrinks hemorrhoid tissue thanks to the heat generated by infrared light energy. During an IRC procedure, infrared light energy is delivered in a few short bursts via a probe. You may feel a slight warming sensation, but otherwise, the procedure is painless. The heat quickly coagulates (clots) the blood vessels that supply blood to the hemorrhoid. When the problematic blood vessel coagulates, it stops blood flow to the hemorrhoids, shrinks the hemorrhoid tissue, and reduces your symptoms.

The procedure is quick (lasting only a few minutes), effective, and well-tolerated by most patients. There is no downtime required.

How Can IRC Eliminate Internal Hemorrhoids?

Not all hemorrhoids cause the same type of symptoms, but depending on the size and location of the hemorrhoid, you might experience painless bleeding during bowel movements. Left untreated, internal hemorrhoids can be pushed through anal opening while passing stool. This can result in both pain and irritation.

IRC treatment can eliminate these symptoms by shrinking the hemorrhoid and interrupting the flow of blood to the hemorrhoid.

What Happens During IRC?

IRC is a non-surgical procedure, which means there are no incisions required. There's no need to visit the hospital or plan for an overnight procedure. Your IRC procedure takes place right here in the comfort of our Vein Institute offices.

When you arrive for your IRC procedure, you will be asked to change into a gown and lay down on our exam table. You lay on your left side without any need for anesthesia. The probe delivers the infrared light to the affected area. The whole process takes anywhere from 5-10 minutes.

What Can I Expect During My Recovery?

After your procedure, you might experience some slight spotting, which is normal. You can return to your normal activities after your procedure, and our team here at Vein Institute provides you with any additional recovery instructions.
