What is sclerotherapy?

Many people are eager to get rid of their swollen or discolored veins, but vein surgery can seem intimidating. If you're like most people, you'd rather avoid open surgery.

At Vein Institute, patients have access to a variety of nonsurgical treatments. One of the most popular options is sclerotherapy, a highly effective method for removing unwanted veins.

What conditions does sclerotherapy treat?

Sclerotherapy is ideal for small varicose veins and spider veins. These veins often occur on your face, hands, legs, or other areas.

Small veins usually aren't a sign of a health issue. But they can still be a cosmetic nuisance. Spider veins and varicose veins are often dark and blotchy and are hard to conceal with makeup.

Sclerotherapy works by destroying these veins at the source. After treatment, your body reabsorbs the veins, eliminating the need for concealer.

What happens during sclerotherapy?

During sclerotherapy, your expert provider cleans your skin. Next, the medical team injects a special fluid into the affected veins. This fluid irritates the inside of the vein, causing it to collapse. Your body then absorbs the vein, and it fades away.

If you have many spider veins, you may need several injections. Your provider can deliver multiple injections, moving from the largest veins to the smallest. Administrating the injections in this pattern helps reroute blood flow.

Some patients may have troublesome veins located far below the surface of your skin. That's why Vein Institute offers ultrasound technology for exceptional precision. Your provider can use ultrasound to guide the injections to the right location.

What can I expect during my recovery?

Sclerotherapy is a simple outpatient procedure. After treatment, your provider bandages your legs and provides compression stockings. You can then return home.

Most patients can return to their daily activities right away. But it's best to avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and hot baths for the next few days. The Vein Institute team can help you decide when to resume your exercise program.

You may need several sclerotherapy treatments to achieve your desired result. During your consultation, your provider explains how many treatments you need.
